Title
17, United States CodeCopyright
law of the United States (Title 17, U.S. Code) governs the reproduction of copyrighted
material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives
are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these conditions
is that the reproduction is not to be “used for any purpose other than private
study, scholarship or research.” If a patron uses a reproduction for purposes
in excess of “fair use,” the patron may be liable for copyright infringement.
The Library reserves the right to refuse an application for reproduction of an
image if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the request would involve violation
of copyright law.
The complete code is available
for download and review from the United States House of Representatives Office
of the Law Revision Counsel.
